Buenos Aires Noir

The Series

The city rendered in silver.

Buenos Aires arrived as a revelation. The architecture alone — Belle Époque facades, the accumulated grandeur of a city that built itself for permanence — was immediately legible. The coffee. The pastries. A city with history worn visibly on every surface and the confidence not to explain itself.

It was our third city on the trip. My son had been encouraging me to learn some Spanish. I did not. Colombia had been humbling enough on that front; Argentina, with its Rioplatense cadence bearing almost no resemblance to anything I had encountered before, made the case rather more emphatically. Everything else, however, made perfect sense.

Monochrome was the only honest response to what Buenos Aires offered — the drama already present in every crosswalk, every shadow, every figure moving through that extraordinary light. Color would have softened it.

These images required silver.
