Descended into halite. Came back with this.
Getting there was half the story. A tour from Bogotá — in hindsight, we should have managed transport ourselves. The traffic relentless in both directions. We arrived in Zipaquirá with time to spare before our reservation, wandering the town, taking in the cobbled streets and the particular quiet of a place that exists largely in service of what lies beneath it.
And then the descent.
Two hundred metres underground, carved from ancient halite two hundred million years in the making — part pilgrimage site, part geological wonder, part labyrinth. The air sits differently down there. Heavy, mineral, the salt dust settling into the lungs. Spend enough time inside and something quietly recalibrates — your sense of direction, your sense of scale, reverence and disorientation arriving in equal measure. I followed the light. I followed the people. I stayed as long as the cathedral allowed.
